#VintageSFO

Presenting Vintage Santa Fe Opera! This is the beginning of a new, weekly series we're calling #vintageSFO, designed to bring you materials from our vast archive collections. We are proud of our rich company history and want to share it with you, so watch this space for memories aplenty.

This photo dates back to 1961 and shows our original, 480-seat house (now The Crosby Theatre). A lot has changed since then. In fact, this structure mysteriously burned down in 1967 after a performance of Paul Hindemith's "Cardillac." That fire could have easily marked the end of the Santa Fe Opera, but thanks to the dedication of many, our opera house was rebuilt in time for our 1968 Season...but with much more seating and a partial roof! There would be one more iteration of our theatre in 1998, but what hasn't changed over the years is our spectacular open-air backdrop for performances.⠀

Do you have a memory of our original, open-sky theatre? Were you rained on as an audience member? Tell us about your vintage Santa Fe Opera experience!⠀

2020 Santa Fe Opera Season Cancellation

We know you're concerned. We are too.

Rest assured that the Santa Fe Opera is taking all necessary precautions to secure the health and safety of both our audience and our staff and artists as the season approaches.

Since we do not open the 2020 season until July, we are cautiously optimistic that things may have settled down by then and we have no intention of cancelling the season.

We are monitoring the situation closely and will, in due course, issue more official statements to our patrons and the public.

Mourning the Passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

The Santa Fe Opera joins the world in mourning the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg holds a special place in the heart of our opera company as a long-time patron and lover of the art form. She attended the Santa Fe Opera regularly for many years through 2018. The audience always seemed to know when the Justice was in the theater. A buzz would begin as the Secret Service took their places. During her last week of attendance in 2018, whenever she entered the theater she would be greeted with a standing ovation, which she humbly acknowledged with smiles and a small wave. Over the years, after the performance ended, she would often go backstage to meet the artists.

In 2017, the Santa Fe Opera and the Lensic Performing Arts Center were delighted to welcome Justice Ginsburg for a one-afternoon-only event, "Justice at the Opera," performed by members of the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Program for Singers. The program featured select opera scenes and arias dealing with law and justice, followed by Justice Ginsburg’s engaging insights. Her love of opera was well known; she once said, "Music is the one time my head isn't filled with briefs and opinions. All that is put on a shelf and I just enjoy."

The world has lost a towering intellect and we have lost a beloved and supportive opera fan and friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends and the many artists she delighted over the years with her presence and appreciation.
